1-800-Sean Avery?

Can You Hear Me Now?

This Chris Stevenson piece in the Toronto Sun got lost in the wake of the anniversary of Brendan Burke’s passing:  “Avery would support a gay player”

“…he said if there’s a gay hockey player out there seeking support to come out, the player need only pick up the phone.

Avery said he’s willing to support a player who might feel intimidated by the decision to openly declare his sexual orientation.

“If there’s a kid in Canada or wherever, who is playing and really loves the game and wants to keep playing but he’s worried about coming out, I’d tell him to pick up the phone and call (NHLPA executive director) Donald Fehr and tell him to book me a (plane) ticket.

“I’ll stand beside him in the dressing room while he tells his teammates he is gay.  Maybe if Sean Avery is there, they would have less of a problem with it.”

Maybe if Alexander Ovechkin was by the kid’s side, the teammates would care a little more?  But good for Avery in any event.  It makes him harder to hate… but only a little.

But our message to whoever wants to come out, no matter what level or league, drop us a line first.  We’re nicer guys and can use a scoop.  And we can maybe hook you with Alex or a similar real hockey player.

Sean: You owe us a round of drinks at Warren 77 for all those nice things we said about your Marc Jacobs photo shoot.  Oh yeah, right, nevermind…
