I agree, there is no pattern to the fines/suspensions, unless it seems to involve a well-known “star” player like DSedin. (Someone was ballsy enough to claim it was accidental due to Spurgeon’s (lack of) height. Seriously???)

There’s some degree of logic to the closed-doors approach when it comes to closing ranks on disciplinary actions (especially WRT On-Ice officiating), but it’s frustrating as anything.

Having seen the hits in question, I agree that there should have been a minor supplemental call made against D!Sedin – he’s going to be sitting awhile with the head injury, but just in acknowledging that his hit wasn’t above board, either (and in no way excusing Keith’s hit, but it’s possible his judgment was a bit off after getting rattled, leading to throwing the elbow). The fact that Keith’s d-partner has been repeatedly sidelined by concussions makes it all the harder to claim that Keith didn’t know what kind of impact the act could have, but at the same time, decisions get made so fast in hockey that the option needs to be taken off the table.

One other notable player for the “Sidelined due to concussion to significant impact” list is Nicklas Backstrom, who will be (if lucky) back in the lineup for the Caps around the same time they (possibly) hit the playoffs. [/ramble]
