Hockey lexicon is so rich, but for the casual fan, and depending on said fan’s demographic, it’s occasionally pretty confusing.
While watching a game, it’s sometimes easy to be misled by the announce teams. “Did he just say what I thought he said?”
The first of a PBs semi-regular feature: “Hockey slang that sounds gay but isn’t.” Contributions are welcome.

Backstrom head-mans to Ovechkin.
5 on 4 action?
Thanks for starting this, guys. I’ve been a diehard Caps fan since I was 12 and have wondered many a time at the Booth whether I was the only ‘mo in the building (except the few times I drug whoever I was dating at the time to games).
Pulling the goalie?
Ah, how funny! A gay blog making a gay joke about a hockey player. This looks great for our community; keep up the good work guys!
JD – if you meant that genuinely, thanks! If you meant that sarcastically, thanks!
I don’t get it. How is “Sidney Crosby” a Hockey slang?? Of course I wish he were gay, oh wait . . . No I don’t because I’d be jealous as sh*t.
I love Semin!
What about the definition of Holding?
From Wikipedia:
Holding
Grabbing an opponent’s body, equipment or clothing with the hands or stick.
Often hear things like a player was “double-teamed” by opposing defensemen. That’ll usually get me giggling.
Ok, this is obviously the opposite of sounding gay, but it has to be the dirtiest name in the NHL. Grant Clitsome.
often youll here the tv guy say something like “letang takes richards into the corner hard, from behind, those two are really going at it… ” “yeah bob, those two have quite a history from last season when it seemed like on every shift they couldnt wait to get after each other… ”
its all innuendo… every sport has its variations…. lmao every time…
~ cheers…
A couple of penalties come to mind: “checking from behind” (Hey, who’s checking my behind?”) and “grabbing the stick” (actual fan reaction: “I bet that’s not the first time you’ve grabbed some other dude’s stick!”)
